Senior Legal Counsel
Property / Development / Building Safety / Construction
We are exclusively instructed by our market leading Real Estate client which has a newly created position for an experienced lawyer to lead and project manage teams on high risk, high value and complex projects surrounding building safety.
Role & Required Experience
This role will require the hire to be involved with cradle to grave building safety work. They will be involved at the most senior levels of the business and with external clients and developers in almost every conversation about buildings where there is an issue or potential issue as to safety.
Our client is responsible for managing an enormous nationwide property portfolio and this is a business critical hire. Someone will need to quickly get to grips with the issues when there is a potential issue - giving thought to how to mitigate risk, check obligations under lease, take internal Health & Safety advice, confirm title and understand the client's obligations and responsibilities, apply relevant new building safety and secondary legislation. They will speak to the project team about puling in client liaison managers and the impact on tenants, involve surveyors to manage works, deal with funding arrangements and agreements.
This role could suit a lawyer with a transactional property or construction or projects background. Ideally a lawyer who has some residential development experience (although could be commercial) but potentially even a contentious property or construction lawyer.
Building Safety Fund work is an area where our client appreciates lawyers are only just now starting to focus but someone with an interest, if not depth of expertise, would be ideal. Alternatively, someone familiar with navigating a similar regulatory landscape.
Even if you are not an existing property development lawyer, you will be comfortable looking at leases and licences and have a decent level of wider property understanding comfortable enough to challenge some of the biggest developer clients in the country.
This is not a role for a traditional lawyer who is comfortable only advising in their niche area of expertise but for someone with a robust and pragmatic character, able to blend aspects of various areas of law and project management together. You will need to stand your ground with some of the most senior members of staff in FTSE companies and be comfortable with what you know and able to spot what you don't and get external assistance from law firms.
Our client knows this is a big role and they don't expect to hire someone who knows everything involved. What they do need though is a solutions orientated self-starter to determine what they need to find out if they don't know all the answers. Someone who can pull a team together and establish what needs doing and who is going to do it.
This is a challenging role which is likely to allow the opportunity to progress a career into a role wider than strictly legal in the future.
This is a 100% remote role so you can work from home anywhere in the country, with occasional site and office visits as necessary. A competitive salary package is on offer.
